Mr. Jeeva Sagar
Ambassador
A 1991 batch Indian Foreign Service Officer, Ambassador Jeeva Sagar presented his credentials to His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on 22nd January 2018. Before arriving in Kuwait he was heading the Multilateral Conferences Division in New Delhi and was also the CEO of the Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, a centre for the Indian Diaspora under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of External Affairs of India.
Ambassador Sagar served both at Head Quarters and in various Indian Missions spread across different parts of the world including West Asia, Africa, North Americas, East Asia and Europe. In New Delhi he was Director for Pakistan Affairs (2005-2007) and was a member of several Indian delegations that dealt with the Composite Dialogue process between the two countries. He was also a member of the first Joint Anti-Terror Commission established by the two governments.
He served as India’s High Commissioner to the West African countries of the Republic of Ghana and Sierra Leone, and as Ambassador to the Republic of Togo and Burkina Faso (2013-2016). This was a critical period for Sierra Leone due to the unfortunate Ebola crisis, and for Burkina Faso because of major changes in its political history, and Amb Sagar deftly guided India’s relations with these friendly countries during this time. Another crucial phase in Amb Sagar’s diplomatic career was 2003-2004 when, as Charge d’Affaires, he was advising the Indian Government on Zimbabwe’s association with the Commonwealth.
As Joint Secretary in New Delhi prior to his appointment as Ambassador to Kuwait , Mr. Sagar was a key member of the committees set up by the Government of India that organized important events including BRICS Summit (Goa), Heart of Asia Ministerial Conference on Afghanistan (Amritsar), Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) (New Delhi) in 2016, Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas conference (Bangalore), International Day of Yoga for Diplomats (New Delhi) , ASEAN Ministerial Conference (New Delhi), India-Japan Summit (Ahmedabad) , African Development Bank Meeting (Gandhi Nagar) in 2017, and PIO Parliamentarians Conference (New Delhi) in 2018, among others.
Ambassador Sagar studied Physics, taught Physics and English to college students, and worked as a Banker before joining the Indian Foreign Service.
He is married to Lydia Srilatha and has two daughters.
He was a member of his college cricket team, plays badminton, and is fond of Bollywood music.
