Choosing the right career for yourself isn’t always easy; we aren’t all born knowing we want to be doctors, astronauts, or prime ministers. Furthermore, many students do not know what they want to do for a career when they apply for a specific degree. As students, you are already occupied with so many decisions to make on a daily basis. The good news for those who are undecided about their career is that there are many jobs available that do not require a degree in any subject. With numerous options available, deciding which one is best for you can be difficult. To help you make your decision, here is a sampling of graduate careers open to you regardless of your degree subject.

Human Resources

The Human Resources (HR) department is responsible for the well-being of the employees in the company. Recruitment, payroll, employment policies, and benefits are a few examples of their duties. HR can also serve as a liaison between employees and managers, resolving problems and clarifying information like sick pay, employment policies, and maternity leave. You don’t need a human resources degree to work in human resources. Many employers, however, require graduates to have a UK 2:1 (or international equivalent) in their degree. Graduates typically start their careers as human resources administrators or assistants. However, some jobs may require a Certificate in Personnel Practice (CPP) or a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) course.

Teaching

There is a need for teachers at all levels of education, from early childhood education to higher education lecturers. Hence, no matter what degree you have, this option is always a possibility. Typically, completing a one-year PGCE (Post-Graduate Certificate in Education) is a minimum requirement. Aside from the obvious choice of teaching a specific subject, there are numerous opportunities to specialise in a particular area of education; for example, you could focus on teaching children with special educational requirements or English as a Foreign Language (if you fancy traveling, you could even teach English abroad). Teaching is well-known for its high levels of job satisfaction and ample vacation time. In our education course guide, you can learn more about the various jobs available in teaching and education. According to PayScale, an entry-level primary school teacher in the UK will earn around £26,200 (approximately US$33,000).

Hospitality and Travel Administration

To work in the hospitality industry, you must have excellent communication skills and people skills. Language skills will be handy if you want to work internationally or have visitors worldwide. Graduate programs in hospitality are open to people with any educational background, though some may require a minimum grade, and having a relevant degree may give you an advantage. In addition to a hospitality degree, prominent degrees such as business administration, economics, or management studies can be a great boost to your career in the industry. In the United Kingdom, the standard salary for an assistant general manager in the hospitality industry is £23,000 (approximately US$29,300).

Public Relations (PR)

Working in public relations is all about managing your clients’ reputations. Excellent relationship-building skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, and good organisational skills are all required for a career in public relations. Although no specific degree is needed to work in public relations, you can advance your career by studying business, communications, and marketing. If you’re having trouble finding work, consider looking into related fields such as event management. Salaries in public relations typically range from £18,000 to £20,000 (approximately US$22,800 to US$25,380), but they can quickly rise as you gain experience.

Entrepreneurship – Be Your Own Boss

Finally, if none of these careers pique your interest, you can ‘go it alone by starting your own business. Compared to a steady full-time job, self-employment carries a higher level of risk

because you never know how much money you’ll have coming in from one month to the next. You do not receive sick leave, paid holidays, or Christmas parties. On the other hand, being your boss provides you with a level of flexibility you would not have if you were employed in someone else’s business, putting you in control of your own life and future. Because you can start a business doing something you enjoy, being self-employed allows you to pursue your interests – and that’s a capable motivator that will make it much simpler to wake up in the mornings and put in the extended hours required to make your business a success. Some graduates start a business in their spare time while working for someone else (which also teaches valuable business skills), eventually transitioning to full-time self-employment as the business grows.

With a bachelor’s degree, you can choose from approximately 174 different career paths expected to grow by 10% from 2016 to 2026—much faster than the overall growth rate of 7%. Perhaps this is why workers with bachelor’s degrees have a lower unemployment rate of 2.7% compared to those with less education. Several factors will determine your salary, including your experience level, specialty, and employment location. The highest-paying bachelor’s degree jobs will undoubtedly put your education to use.
