While enjoying the Himalayan pilgrimage is an adventure in itself, planning the Char Dham Yatra, especially from abroad, is a whole another story. It comes with several logistical challenges, to say the least. You’ll have to take care of some critical things like visas, currency exchange, travel arrangements, and budget management.

What is Char Dham Yatra?
Let’s quickly introduce you to this sacred pilgrimage of North India. The holy sites are located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, and each has a unique significance:
- Yamunotri – This is the source of the Yamuna River. It’s believed that visiting here protects the devotees from untimely deaths.
- Gangotri – This is considered the source of the Ganges River. It’s said that the Goddess Ganga cleanses the sins of whoever offers her prayers.
- Kedarnath – Besides being a Char Dham site, it’s also one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, therefore having a twofold religious significance.
- Badrinath – Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple is the place where he meditated millennia ago.
It is believed that undertaking this Yatra washes away sins and liberates one from the cycle of birth and death, providing Moksha.
Visa Tips for NRIs
Arrival Visa and e-Visa Options
If you’re an NRI with a foreign passport (e.g., U.S., Canadian, Australian), entry into India will require a visa. Fortunately, India has simplified the process through its e-Visa system. Through this new process, you can get your visa straight up on arrival. All you have to do is apply for it in advance.
Types of Visa Suitable for Char Dham Yatra:
- Tourist e-Visa
- Validity: You can get a visa with a validity range of 30 days, 1 year, or even 5 years, depending on your suitability
- Cost: ~$25 to $80. This largely depends on duration and nationality
- Processing Time: Just 3–5 business days
- Apply: Visit https://indianvisaonline.gov.in to avail your visa
- Documents Required: To get your visa, keep documents like passport, digital photo, return ticket, and travel details handy
- OCI/PIO Cardholders
- If you hold an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card, you do not need a visa. Just carry your OCI card and passport, and you’re good to go!
Tip: Stay away from unofficial visa websites as they’re likely to be scams. Use only the government portal. Also, print a hard copy of your e-Visa approval letter before departure.
Currency and Money Management
Throughout India, the Indian Rupee (INR), is accepted as a valid form of currency. It’s best if you convert your money to the local currency as you arrive. It comes especially useful for transport, temple donations, tips, and small purchases at local vendors. Also, carry cash in INR at the Dhams, as most places won’t accept cards or online payments. ATMs are also fewer in the hilly areas.
Exchange and Currency Tips:
- Get at least $200–300 exchanged at the airport itself for your initial expenses.
- You can use ATMs in major towns like Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun. Also, carry an international debit/credit card with currency conversion enabled.
- Install apps like Wise or Revolut as they charge lower fees for international transactions.
- Digital wallets like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay are widely accepted in the country. Get a local SIM (preferably from Jio/BSNL as they work best in the hilly areas), and register with an Indian mobile number.
Tip: Always carry ₹5,000–₹10,000 in cash for remote areas as digital payments may not work there.
Best Time to Visit Char Dham
The Char Dham shrines open from late April to early November. However, the ideal times for NRIs are in the months of:
- May to June: You get pleasant weather at this time with clear blue skies. However, this is a peak season, so expect big crowds.
- September to October: This is the off-monsoon season. You’re welcomed with lush green valleys, fresh from the preceding monsoon season. Also, if you want a peaceful Darshan, visit at this time as crowds are significantly less at this time.
Tip: Avoid July and August as these are monsoon months. There’s a constant risk of landslides and roads are also slippery. The Yatra is quite unsafe during this period.
Travel Options: Getting There from Abroad
Reaching the shrines from abroad can be divided into two parts. In the first leg, you can reach the commercial airport, and in the second leg, you can use the local transport to reach the gateways to the Char Dhams.
A. International Flight to India
The best route is to take a flight from New Delhi, which is the busiest airport of India. It is also well-connected with major cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Houston.
- Flight Cost: $800–$1,400 round-trip (economy)
- Duration: 15–24 hours, depending on stopovers

B. Domestic Transfer to Uttarakhand
After you arrive in Delhi, proceed to either Haridwar/Rishikesh or Dehradun, which are the main gateways to Char Dham.
