Hiding Chat And Notification On Popular Apps

Below are quick tips per app. Click each link for full details.

WhatsApp

  • Archive chats: On iPhone, swipe left on a chat and tap Archive; on Android, long-press the chat and tap Archive. The chat is hidden from your main list and moves into the “Archived” folder. (This just hides the chat – it’s not deleted.)
  • Lock chats: WhatsApp now lets you lock chats with a PIN or biometrics. On iOS, open the chat, tap the contact or group name, then scroll to and toggle on Lock chat (you’ll set up Face/Touch ID). On Android, long-press the chat, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Lock Chat. Locked chats disappear into a hidden “Locked Chats” folder until you unlock them.
  • Mute notifications: Open the chat, tap the name at the top, then turn on Mute notifications and pick a duration. You’ll still get messages but without sound or banner alerts.
  • More on WhatsApp: See our in-depth WhatsApp chat guide for extra tips.

Instagram

To hide Instagram chats you can either use disappearing messages or mute the chats.

  • Disappearing messages: Open the chat you want to hide. Tap Disappearing Messages. Choose “Once They’re Seen.”
  • Mute messages: Open an Instagram chat, tap the person’s name at the top, then select Mute messages (and Mute calls if you like). This silences new message alerts from that chat.
  • More on Instagram: See our Instagram DM guide for details on privacy and notifications.

WeChat

  • Hide chat: WeChat lets you hide a conversation from the Chats list. Long-press on the chat, then choose Do Not Display This Chat or Hide. The chat will disappear from your list (it will reappear if you send/receive a new message).
  • Mute notifications: Open the chat, tap the “…” menu or the contact’s name, and turn off Message Notifications (this varies by version). There’s no built-in secret chat mode, so hiding is all about deleting or using the above hide option.
  • WeChat doesn’t have a special archive folder – hiding only works by “not displaying” a chat or by clearing the conversation. If you really need cover, you can clear or delete messages.
  • More on WeChat: See our WeChat guide for additional privacy settings.

Facebook Messenger

Archive chats: On iPhone, tap and hold the chat you want to hide, then choose Archive Conversation. On Android, tap and hold and then tap Archive (or tap More > Archive). Archived chats are removed from your inbox until you message again.

Mute notifications: In a conversation, tap the person’s or group’s name at the top (or the info icon), then tap Mute. You’ll get options like mute for 1 hour, 8 hours, or until you turn it back on. Muting silences alerts but the chat stays visible.

More on Messenger: Check out our Messenger tips for hiding and notifications.

iMessage

  • Hide Alerts: iMessage doesn’t have an archive or hide feature – you can only delete or hide alerts. To mute a chat, swipe left on the conversation in your list and tap the bell icon (Hide Alerts). Or touch and hold the chat, then tap Hide Alerts. A little crossed-out bell will appear next to the conversation. You’ll still get messages, but your phone won’t notify you.
  • Hide on Lock Screen: To keep previews private, go to Settings > Notifications > Messages > Show Previews and select When Unlocked or Never. That way message text won’t show up on your lock screen.
  • More on iMessage: See our Apple Messages guide for more notification tricks.

Telegram

  • Archive chats: Telegram has an Archive folder. On iOS, swipe left on a chat and tap Archive. On Android, tap and hold a chat and choose Archive (or swipe right if enabled). The chat is moved into Archived Chats (pull down in the chat list to reveal it). If a new message arrives, the chat pops out of archive (unless you’ve muted it). You can also swipe left on “Archived Chats” itself to hide the folder.
  • Mute notifications: Open the chat, tap the name at the top, and toggle Mute notifications. You can pick a time or mute forever. Muted chats stay in your archive if you left them there, so it’s a great way to keep a chat hidden.

Snapchat

  • Clear conversation: Snapchat is built for disappearing messages. In a chat, tap the friend’s profile (or chat), then tap the ••• (Chat Settings) icon. Under Delete Chats, choose After Viewing (or 24 Hours) to make snaps vanish. If you want to hide a whole conversation from your list, you can also tap “Clear from Chat Feed” here (it will reappear if they send a new snap).
  • Mute notifications: From the Chat screen, long-press a friend’s name and select Chat Settings. Then toggle Message Notifications off. This way, you won’t get a sound or badge when they send Snaps or Chats.
  • More on Snapchat: See our Snapchat guide for keeping messages discreet.

Discord

  • Ignore: Discord’s “Ignore” option lets you hide someone’s messages without blocking them. Right-click the user’s name in a server or direct message, then select “Ignore.” Their messages will be hidden, and they won’t be notified. You can unignore them anytime by repeating the same steps.
  • Mute channels: In any server channel, click the bell 🔔 icon at the top to mute that channel. You can mute one channel or an entire server (right-click the server icon or tap it and go to Notification Settings). When muted, you won’t get pings or badge counts for that channel. This keeps busy servers silent.

Viber

  • Hide chat: Viber lets you put chats into a hidden PIN-protected folder. Long-press (Android) or swipe left (iOS) on the chat you want hidden and tap Hide chat. You’ll be asked to set a 4-digit PIN (or Face/Touch ID) if it’s your first time. The chat will vanish from the list. To find hidden chats, type your PIN into the search bar or search for the contact.
  • Mute chat: Long-press (Android) or swipe left (iOS) on a chat and tap turn off Notifications, then choose how long. You’ll stop getting sounds/vibrations for new messages (you’ll see a mute icon on the chat).
  • More on Viber: See our Viber chat tips for hidden and quiet chats.

LINE

  • Hide chats: In LINE, you can hide chats so they don’t clutter your list. Tap and hold the chat, then choose Hide. The chat will move to Hidden Chats (accessible via Settings > Chats > Hidden Chats). On a phone, you can also tap Edit in the chat list, select chats, and tap Hide (LINE shows this option in Chats > Edit as well).
  • Mute chat: Open the chat, tap the three-dot menu icon at top, and select Mute. You’ll toggle Mute notifications for that chat. (On Android/iOS you can also long-press in the chat list and pick Mute.) Muting silences alerts but keeps the chat visible.
  • More on LINE: See our LINE hiding guide for step-by-step help.

ShareChat

  • Hide chat: Open the chat, tap the three-dot menu at top, and select Hide message. The conversation will disappear from the chat list. To find hidden chats, scroll up in your Chat list and tap Hidden chat, then long-press the chat and choose Unhide chat.
  • Notifications: ShareChat doesn’t have a per-chat mute. To silence notifications, you can either adjust app permissions in your phone settings or leave the conversation.
  • More on ShareChat: Check our ShareChat guide for any updates on notifications.

Zalo

  • Hide conversation: Zalo lets you lock a chat with a PIN. Long-press the conversation, tap Hide conversation, and enter a 4-digit PIN. The chat will vanish from your list and only appear when you search it (you’ll need the PIN to unhide). You can also do this on desktop by right-clicking a chat and choosing Hide conversation.
  • Mute notifications: On iOS, swipe left on the chat and tap the bell icon to mute. On Android, long-press the chat and select Turn off notifications. (Alternatively, open the chat, tap the three-line menu, and choose Block to silence it.) The chat stays visible but won’t buzz your phone.
  • More on Zalo: See our Zalo privacy guide for extra tips.

Signal

  • Archive chats: To hide a Signal chat without deleting it, archive it. On Android, swipe the chat to the right or long-press it and tap Archive. On iOS, swipe the chat left and tap Archive. Archived chats move out of your main list; scroll to the bottom of the chat list and tap Archived chats to see them. New messages will bring chats back unless you re-archive them.
  • Mute notifications: Open the chat, tap the contact’s name at the top, and select Mute notifications. Choose how long (1 hour, 8 hours, 1 day, 7 days, or Always). A mute icon shows on the chat. You’ll still receive messages, but Signal won’t alert you.
  • More on Signal: For more secret and hidden chat tricks, see our Signal guide.

KakaoTalk

  • Secret (Hidden) Chats: KakaoTalk offers a Secret Chat feature for one-on-one messages. It’s an end-to-end encrypted hidden conversation. To start one, open a 1:1 chat, tap the menu (⋮), and choose Secret Chat. This creates a separate chat thread that’s secured by a code or fingerprint. (Messages in Secret Chat disappear after you close the chat or after a set time.)
  • Mute notifications: In any chat, tap the menu at the top and toggle Mute Chat. The other person won’t know you muted them – you’ll just stop getting alerts from that chat.

FAQs

Can I hide chats without deleting them?

Yes! Many apps let you archive or hide chats instead of deleting. Archiving moves a chat out of your inbox (WhatsApp calls it “Archived”, Telegram has an “Archived Chats” folder, Signal has Archive, etc.). The chat stays intact and can be unarchived later. Only apps like iMessage (Apple Messages) lack this feature – with iMessage you can only mute alerts but not truly hide a conversation.

Will someone know if I mute their chat?

No. Muting or archiving is done on your device and doesn’t notify the other person. For example, WhatsApp does not tell anyone when you lock or mute a chat. The other party just sees that you’re no longer responding (but they get no alert about your settings). All common apps work this way – it’s a private setting on your side.

What happens to archived chats?

Archived chats aren’t deleted; they’re just tucked away. In WhatsApp, archived chats stay hidden until a new message arrives. In Telegram and Signal, you must manually go to Archived Chats to view them. You can usually unarchive or unhide when you need to see them again.

Can I reverse hiding or locking a chat?

Yes. In most apps, you can unarchive/unhide or unlock chats. For example, WhatsApp and Signal let you swipe or long-press an archived chat and choose Unarchive. Viber, LINE, and ShareChat have “Hidden chats” lists or search features where you can restore a chat. Always check Settings or the app’s help section for “Hidden” or “Archive” to learn how to bring chats back.

Will hiding chats affect message delivery?

No. Hiding, archiving, or muting doesn’t stop messages from coming. You will still receive texts or snaps; they’re just placed in a hidden area or silenced. You won’t see notifications, but the messages are waiting for you (unless the app deletes them after viewing, like Snapchat). Each app handles hidden chats a bit differently, but these tips cover the most common ways to keep your conversations private and quiet. Use the steps above like a savvy friend would, and you’ll have your chats under control in no time.
