What is a Normal Chat or DM in Instagram?
We keep seeing “DM us to know more” on most service provider accounts on Instagram. It refers to a Direct Message. A DM is a private message that can be directly sent to any user on Instagram. How do you do that?
- Open Instagram.
- Tap on the messenger-like icon at the top right of the home screen.
- Tap on the create new message icon, which looks like a pencil.
- Enter the name and tap on it.
- Type in your message and hit send.
What is a Secret Chat in Instagram?
A secret chat is a secure chat that is end-to-end encrypted and is not accessible to anyone, including Meta. There is another way to have a secret chat on Instagram using Vanish Mode, in which, once you read the messages and close the chat window, the messages will disappear. How do you enable both of these features?
- Open Instagram.
- Tap on the messenger-like icon at the top right of the home screen.
- Tap on the create new message icon, which looks like a pencil.
- Enter the name and tap on it.
- In the chat window, tap on the person’s name and go to Privacy & Safety > Use end-to-end encryption or Privacy & Safety > Vanish Mode.
- Type in your message and hit send
Note: The end-to-end encryption feature is not available for all kinds of accounts yet. You will have two separate chats for the same person.
