An Act to provide for the relief of indebted agricul-
turists in the 3[State of Tamil Nadu].
WREREASit is expedient to provide for the relief
of indebted agriculturists in the S[State of Tamil
Nadu]; It is hereby enacted as follows:-
CHAPTER I.
Preliminary.
Short title. 1. This Act may be called the ‘[Tamil NaduJ Agri-
culturists Relief Act, 1938.
Extent.
- It extends to the whole of the ‘[State of Tamil
Nad u].
- These words were substituted for the word “Madras” by
the Tamil Nadu Adaptation of Laws Order, 1969, as amended by
the Tam11Nadu Adaptation of Laws (Second Amendment ) Order,
1964, whlc11 came into force on the 14th January 1969.

This Act was extended to the merged State of Pudukkottai by
.iection 3 of, and the First Schedule to, the Tamil Nadu Merged
State(Laws) Act, 1949 (Tamil Nadu Act XXXVof 1949).
TKS~ctas was in force immediately before the date of the publi-
cation of the Tamil Nadu Agriculturists Relief (Amendment) Act,
1972 uamil Nadu Act 8 of 1973) in the State of Tamil Nadu except
in tktransferred territory and as amended by tho latter Act was
extended to the transferred territory by section 25 of that Act.

(i) ‘person ‘ means an individual and includes ,
an undivided Hindu family, a marumakkattayam or
aliyasantana tarwad or tavazbi, but does not include
a body corporate, a charitable or religious institution
or an unincorporated company or association ;
(ii) ‘agriculturist’ means a person who-
(a) has a saleable interest in any agricultural
or horticultural land in the ‘[State of Tamil Nadu],

is assessed by the “State) Government to land revenue
(which shall be deemed to include peshkash and quit-
rent), or which is held free of tax under a grant made,
confirmed or recognized by Government ;or
(b) holds an interest in such land under a
,[Tamil landholder under the ‘[Titmil Nadu] Estates Land
Act, 1908, us tenant, ryot or tlndcr-tenure holder ;
